Medicare Basics

Q: Does Medicare cover care outside the U.S.?

A: Original Medicare generally does not cover international care. Some Medigap plans include limited foreign travel emergency coverage, and a few Medicare Advantage plans may offer it.

Q: Is there a maximum out-of-pocket limit with Original Medicare?

A: No. Original Medicare does not have an annual cap on what you pay. That’s why many people choose a Medigap or Medicare Advantage plan to limit their costs.

Q: Does Medicare cover dental, vision, or hearing?

A: Original Medicare (Parts A & B) does not cover routine dental cleanings, vision exams, eyeglasses, or hearing aids. Many Medicare Advantage plans do offer these benefits, so it’s worth comparing options.

Q: What’s the difference between Medicare and Medicaid?

A: Medicare is federal insurance mainly for people 65+ or with certain disabilities. Medicaid is a state-run program that helps people with very low income. Some people qualify for both, which lowers their out-of-pocket costs significantly.

What does Medicare actually cover?

A: Medicare covers hospital care, doctor visits, outpatient services, preventive care, lab tests, durable medical equipment, and some home health care. It does not automatically include dental, vision, or hearing unless you choose a plan that offers those benefits.
